THE LADY AND ANIME

Exploring the World of Anime

Soothing the Spirit

Music  has the power of healing. This is not just a cliched saying. I have seen it happen, I have felt it happen. People are moved by music in a way that cannot be done by merely speaking. Sakamichi no Apollon has been showing its viewers the power of music. It really brought the jazz in the last episode and had me bobbing my head and snapping my fingers. It saved the show and came to the rescue of one of the minor characters. My Favorite Things by John Coltrane and is a classic. It is one of my favorite pieces of music, always has been. Nowadays we are inundated with noise that hides under the guise of music. No live instruments and its not even people’s real voices anymore. Just a lot of flash with no substance. I really love the justice and respect Sakamichi no Apollon gave to My Favorite Things. They really rocked it out (pun intended). I really like that the show is introducing a new generation to jazz. This song has always soothed me when I was feeling down. It brings me right back up. Sentaro’s playing of the drums in the show’s version is magnificent. Lots of energy and spirit, “like two princes having a good-natured argument” or something along those lines.

This show is a refreshing change of pace in regards to the anime shows dealing with high school characters. In some ways these characters seem mature beyond their years but then you get a glimpse of their immaturity in how they react to situations. The irrational outbursts, the over-analyzing situations, the insecurity though prevalent in all ages; they are magnified as a teenager. But what is consistent throughout the ages is the love of music. The love that will have people stop what they are doing to listen to you. The power that rebuilds a relationship, a friendship and to speak for two idiots who have no idea how to use words. They can’t tell each other how they feel so they talk it out on the piano and drums.

There have been many times when I have just not been having a good day. Times when I just want to sit in a corner and read a feel-good book. I will find the music that I know will lift my spirits; usually gospel, upbeat jazz, and/or salsa. I’ve got a thing for saxophones, guitars, pianos, drums, tambourines, and soulful voices. Music enriches your life and I don’t think I have met anyone who doesn’t enjoy music. We may have different tastes but we all like to turn on music. A lot of modern music has its roots in jazz and/or the blues and if you listen closely you can hear sampling in many popular songs. Personally, I prefer the originals. And you know what, so far it looks like Sakamichi no Apollon is an original.

Totally agree, this was a great episode. Both musically and writing-wise.

This episode was absolutely awesome! I really want to buy this soundtrack! That session between Sentaro and Kaoru was amazing! You know, I was honestly considering dropping this series, but after this episode I’m in it for the long haul!

On a slightly unrelated note, your review for “5 Centimeters Per Second” is ready!
